Manual override is a must.

You imply that new technologies are bound to have hiccups in the beginning, but they are bound to sort it out and get it right, eventually... but the fact is that GPS, now ubiquitous, still makes errors that would send cars into lakes, against buildings or over cliffs! Sure, these errors are rare, ocurring maybe on less than 1% of occasions... but how many deaths by AI are considered acceptable?

The only reason GPS does not cause major accidents is that there are still humans driving those cars; and when a person sees that the GPS is guiding them towards doom, the human simply ignores the GPS and does whatever makes sense, since they are driving the car.

This person in the Waymo car in Phoenix should be able to simply press a button that would stop the car safely on the curbside and/or allow the passenger to take control for a limited time (perhaps 30 seconds?) in order to avoid a dangerous situation.

If we are supposed to rely on contacting customer service to get out of a predicament, a lot of people will die while waiting for someone to pick up the phone!
